Last week we went camping with the Vandelden clan at Rockwood Conservation Area. While Francis and I brought lots of books (like we do every year :), we didn't get much opportunity to read (like every year). It's kind of become an annual tradition of sorts - a reminder of how vacation used to be, and how it is very different now with kids.
Different, but good. Less restful vacation, more discovery through the eyes of the kids. There are adventures to be had, like eating pizza in old ruins, and imagining stories about the people who lived there.
Singing songs in the ruins to hear the sound echo around the walls.
Walking and rocking a little boy who got sunburnt or wind-burnt and/or overstimulated. He enjoyed camping for the first 3 days, and then something snapped :) It was probably a combination of a million things - feeling crummy from the burn, very cold nights, poor sleeping conditions, low milk supply, too much hot chocolate in my milk supply...let's just say we are enjoying being home and having the smiles return, and all the extra hands at camping who would rock and hold and cuddle and comfort (both him and me :)
A little girl covering her eyes so easter eggs could be hidden, then found. (who also believes she can paddle a canoe single handedly).
I am so thankful for a wonderful husband who took on the role of cook so I could have some down time, and focus on feeding the little man. There were talks to be had, fires to be stoked and lots of dirt, fresh air and discoveries along walks.
Now to tackle Mt. Wash-more!

Glad that your back home safe and sound! Don't you think one of the best parts of "roughing" it is coming home and appreciating all you have?! We loved seeing you guys again. Give the kids a kiss for us!
